This Cookie Policy explains how Pix Me (pixme.org) uses cookies and similar browser storage technologies on www.pixme.org, the home of our online magazine and the Pixme AI visual studio. The short version: we keep things minimal. By default, the only thing we store is your cookie-consent choice. Analytics cookies are only ever set if analytics are enabled on the site and you say yes.
Key takeaways
- Pix Me is a static website with no advertising cookies and no analytics running by default.
- Your cookie choice is saved in your browser's localStorage as
pixme_cookie_consentfor up to 12 months. - If we enable analytics such as Google Analytics 4, cookies like
_gaare set only after you give consent. - You can change your mind at any time using the "Change cookie settings" button on this page.

What cookies and local storage are
Cookies are small text files that a website asks your browser to store on your device. Your browser sends them back to the website on later visits, which allows the site to recognize your browser, remember settings or measure how pages are used. Cookies can be:
- First-party cookies, set by the website you are visiting (in this case, www.pixme.org);
- Third-party cookies, set by a different domain, for example an analytics or advertising service;
- Session cookies, which are deleted when you close your browser;
- Persistent cookies, which stay on your device until they expire or you delete them.
Local storage (localStorage) is a similar browser technology that lets a website save small pieces of information on your device. Unlike cookies, data in localStorage is not automatically sent to the web server with each request; it stays in your browser and can only be read by scripts running on the same website. It persists until it is deleted by the site or by you.
Other similar technologies include session storage, pixels (tiny images used to record that a page or email was viewed) and device fingerprinting. Pix Me does not use tracking pixels or fingerprinting on the website.
In this policy, we use the word "cookies" to cover cookies and these similar technologies, as the law generally treats them the same way. Under the EU ePrivacy Directive and the UK Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR), websites must ask for your consent before storing or reading information on your device, unless that storage is strictly necessary to provide a service you have requested.
How Pix Me uses cookies
We designed the Pix Me website to work without tracking. Pages are served as static files, there are no user accounts, and there is no advertising on the site. That means our use of cookies is limited to:
- remembering the choice you make in our cookie banner, so we do not ask you again on every page; and
- optionally, if analytics are enabled in future and only after you consent, measuring how people use the site so we can improve our articles and pages.
We do not use cookies to build advertising profiles, to track you across other websites, or to sell information about you.
Categories of cookies
We group cookies into four categories. Only the first category is active by default.
Strictly necessary
Needed for the site to work or to respect your privacy choices. These do not require consent. On Pix Me, this is limited to storing your cookie-consent choice.
Preferences
Remember settings such as display options. Pix Me does not currently use any preference cookies beyond the consent choice itself.
Analytics
Help us understand how visitors use the site. Off by default. Used only if analytics are enabled and you consent.
Marketing
Used to track visitors across websites for advertising. Pix Me does not use any marketing or advertising cookies.
Cookies and storage items we use
The table below lists every cookie and storage item that the Pix Me website may place on your device. We keep it up to date whenever something changes.
| Name | Type | Category | Provider | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
pixme_cookie_consent |
localStorage | Strictly necessary | Pix Me (first party) | Stores your cookie choice (for example, whether you accepted or declined analytics) and when you made it, so the banner is not shown on every page and your choice is respected. | 12 months, then you are asked again |
_ga |
Cookie | Analytics (only if enabled and consented) | Google Analytics 4 (set on pixme.org) | Distinguishes unique visitors using a randomly generated identifier, so that visits can be counted without identifying you by name. | Up to 2 years |
_ga_<ID> |
Cookie | Analytics (only if enabled and consented) | Google Analytics 4 (set on pixme.org) | Maintains session state for Google Analytics 4, such as when a visit started and how many pages were viewed. <ID> is the site's measurement ID. |
Up to 2 years |
Note: at the time of writing, analytics are not enabled on Pix Me, so the _ga cookies above are not set at all. They are listed so you know exactly what would be used if we switch analytics on. We will update this page when that happens, and the cookies will still only be set after you consent.
Resources loaded from other servers
Some pages may load fonts, icon sets or scripts from content delivery networks to make the site faster. When your browser downloads these files, the provider receives technical information such as your IP address and browser type, as it would for any web request. These requests are not used by us for tracking, and we do not configure them to set cookies. More detail is available in our Privacy Policy.
Emails and the newsletter
This Cookie Policy covers the website. Our newsletter is sent through an email service provider. If that provider uses tracking pixels to measure opens or clicks, we will disclose it at sign-up and in our Privacy Policy and, where consent is required, only use them with your consent.
How analytics would work with consent
If we decide to enable Google Analytics 4 or a similar tool, it will work as follows:
Banner first
When you first visit, a banner asks whether you accept optional analytics cookies. The "Accept" and "Decline" options are equally easy to choose.
Nothing loads before you choose
The analytics script is not loaded and no analytics cookies are set until you actively accept. Ignoring the banner counts as no consent.
Your choice is saved
We save your choice in pixme_cookie_consent so the banner does not reappear on every page. After 12 months, we ask again.
Privacy-conscious configuration
Where the tool allows, we disable advertising features and data sharing for advertising, avoid sending personal information such as names or emails, and use the shortest practical data-retention setting.
We also respect the Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal: if your browser sends it, we treat it as a refusal of analytics unless you actively choose otherwise.
Google's own explanation of how it uses data from sites that use its services is available at policies.google.com.
How to manage or withdraw your consent
You are in control. You can change or withdraw your consent at any time, and withdrawing is as easy as giving it. Click the button below to reopen the cookie banner and update your choice:
If you withdraw consent for analytics, we will stop loading the analytics script on future page views. Cookies that were already set may remain on your device until they expire, so you may also want to delete them using your browser settings as described below. Withdrawal does not affect the lawfulness of any processing that took place before you withdrew.
You can also reset your choice completely by clearing your browser's site data for www.pixme.org. This deletes the pixme_cookie_consent item, and the banner will be shown again on your next visit.
Browser controls
Most web browsers let you see, block and delete cookies and site data. Blocking all cookies may affect how some websites work, but the Pix Me magazine will remain readable. If you block local storage, the site will simply ask for your cookie choice again on each visit. Instructions for popular browsers:
- Google Chrome: clear, enable and manage cookies
- Mozilla Firefox: clear cookies and site data
- Apple Safari (Mac): manage cookies and website data
- Apple Safari (iPhone and iPad): clear history and cookies
- Microsoft Edge: delete cookies
If analytics are enabled on the site, you can also install the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on, which prevents Google Analytics from collecting data on any website you visit.
Many browsers also offer private or incognito modes, which delete cookies and site data when you close the window, and settings to block third-party cookies by default.
Legal basis
We store the pixme_cookie_consent item because it is strictly necessary to record and respect your privacy choices, which is an exception to the consent requirement under the ePrivacy rules and is supported by our legal obligation and legitimate interest under the GDPR and UK GDPR. Any analytics cookies rely on your consent. For more on how we handle personal information generally, including your rights and how to contact us, please see our Privacy Policy.
Changes to this Cookie Policy
We will update this policy if we change the cookies or storage items we use, for example if we enable analytics or change provider. The "Last updated" date at the top shows when it was last revised. If a change introduces new optional cookies, we will ask for your consent again before setting them.
